A Healthy Schools young carers e-learning module is now available to help school staff who work with young carers. The aim of the module is to increase understanding in schools of particular issues and challenges
facing young carers and their families.

The module is designed to help all school staff identify and support young carers throughout their education, in transition between schools and into further education. Based on a set of questions, it provides insight into young carers and practical ideas about how to support them directly and within the wider school setting.

It can be completed as a stand alone e-leaning tool and takes about 40
minutes to complete. Although users can access and complete the module in their own time, we encourage school leadership teams and governors to follow-up with a discussion around a whole school intervention.

The module has been developed in conjunction with the Department for
Education and the National Young Carers Coalition, and in partnership with The Children’s Society and The Princess Royal Trust.

We’d be grateful of you could let your schools know that this e-learning

How do you know when you’ve made a difference?

The 2010 Every Child Matters (ECM) Full Report is now complete! Please access this link to view the full document.

As you may be aware, the ECM report remains an important source of health information in Bristol. Some examples of this include the following statistical findings from the 2010 report, which show encouraging trends emerging in our schools:

Secondary pupils in Bristol in 2010 are more likely to say that they are aware of a local drug/alcohol advice service for young people (27%) than were those in the same schools in 2009 (17%), and 2008 (23%).

Secondary pupils in Bristol in 2010 are more likely to say that they do not drink alcohol (48%) than were those in the same schools in 2009 (40%).

Secondary pupils in Bristol in 2010 are more likely to score in the top bracket of self-esteem scores (40%) than were those in 2009 (36%).

Young people in Year 10 in Bristol in 2010 are as likely to know where they can get condoms free of charge (66%) than were those in the same age group from 2009 (66%); this maintains the gains seen between 2009 and 2008.

As always, if you would like to find out more about the survey, or if you would like to get involved in supporting Every Child Matters into 2011/12, then please contact the Healthy Schools Team via our ‘contact‘ page.

The Decipher ASSIST programme aims to reduce smoking amongst young people aged 12-13 by training influential students to disseminate new norms of behaviour through their established social networks. It has been rigorously evaluated as A Stop Smoking in Schools Trial, funded by the Medical Research Council, which took place in 59 secondary schools in South Wales and the South-West of England.

Results from the trial showed that smoking levels were reduced amongst students who were at ‘high-risk’ of becoming regular smokers (i.e. those students who were ex-smokers, experimenters and occasional smokers). Furthermore, the programme was acceptable to students, teachers and health promotion trainers, and was compatible with a wide range of school contexts.

To minimise the burden on schools, external trainers will implement the ASSIST Programme and supply all the resources required. However, a designated school contact will be required liaise with the ASSIST team and accompany the students at key stages during the programme.

This programme is a Bristol NHS and Smoke Free South West funded programme so is FREE to Bristol Secondary Schools, for further information or to register your interest please contact Victoria Norman

How do you know when you’ve made a difference?

The Bristol Healthy Schools Programme, working with Schools and Students Health Education Unit (SHEU), have just completed the 2010 Every Child Matters (ECM) survey, which collates responses from schools across Bristol to a variety of questions related to the health and wellbeing of children. All schools taking part in the ECM Survey are offered a tailored report which compares pupil feedback against feedback from previous surveys. This allows each school to examine changes and improvements recorded during the intervening period.

To view a copy of the ECM 2010 report summary, please click here

The report contains feedback specific to each individual school, and can be invaluable when used to identify outcomes or pupil health and wellbeing priorities. For example, we are particularly pleased to see from the ECM 2010 report that the number of Year 8s starting smoking has decreased by a significant 5% citywide.

As the survey seeks to give an overview of health needs for the whole of Bristol, it follows that the survey is much more useful when there is a high completion rate– as such, it is our hope that you will consider working with us in 2011/12 to publicise this work and help us to further build upon the successes enjoyed so far.

If you would like a copy of the 2010 full report (PDF), or to simply find out more about the survey, then please email hp.admin@bristol.nhs.uk
